Castalian Spring

The Castalian Spring, located in the ravine near the ancient sanctuary of Delphi, is a site of significant historical and mythological importance. Although the name suggests a connection to the nearby town of Arachova, the spring is physically located within the sanctuary grounds, close to the Temple of Apollo. Historically, this site was considered sacred, with ancient texts describing it as a place where pilgrims purified themselves before consulting the Oracle. The spring is associated with the nymph Castalia, who, according to legend, transformed into a spring to escape the advances of Apollo.

Visitors to the site can observe two distinct fountain structures. The first is an archaic fountain house from the 6th century BCE, featuring a marble-lined basin. A second, Roman-era fountain is situated approximately 50 meters higher, characterized by its seven bronze spouts and niches designed for votive offerings. These structures reflect the enduring reverence for the site across different historical periods.

The spring is accessible to visitors exploring the sanctuary, typically found along the path leading toward the main temple. While the area is open to the public, there are no specific opening hours or admission fees for the spring itself, as it is part of the broader archaeological site. The natural setting, combined with the historical artifacts, offers a quiet space for reflection on the ancient religious practices that once defined this sacred landscape. The visual impact of the stone structures against the natural backdrop of the Phaedriades cliffs remains a key feature for visitors.
