Crete is the largest island in Greece, serving as the southernmost point of the country and the European Union. It offers a diverse landscape ranging from dramatic canyons and snow-capped mountains to pristine sandy beaches and ancient archaeological sites.

Located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa, Crete is the largest Greek island and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean. It is separated from the rest of Greece by the Sea of Crete. The island is characterized by its rugged terrain, featuring the White Mountains in the west and the Lassithi Plateau in the east. The capital, Heraklion, is the largest city and a major cultural hub, home to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum and the Palace of Knossos. Natural wonders like the Samaria Gorge, the longest gorge in Europe, attract hikers and nature enthusiasts. Local cuisine features fresh local produce, olive oil, and traditional dishes like dakos and stakiki. The island is also known for its sweet wine, krassia. The best time to visit is during the spring (April to June) or autumn (September to October) when the weather is pleasant, and the crowds are smaller. Summer is hot and crowded, while winter is mild but some services are limited. Access to Crete is primarily via air, with international airports in Heraklion (HER) and Chania (CHQ). Ferries connect the island to the Greek mainland and other Greek islands. Transportation within the island is best achieved by car or bus, as public transport is limited in rural areas.
