Epirus

Epirus is a rugged, mountainous region in northwestern Greece defined by deep gorges, limestone peaks, and traditional stone villages. It offers a stark, dramatic landscape that contrasts sharply with the country’s famous coastal islands.

Located in northwestern Greece, bordering Albania to the east, Epirus is a land of dramatic topography dominated by the Pindus mountain range. This region is characterized by deep river gorges, dense forests, and high plateaus, offering a rugged alternative to the coastal tourist hubs. The major urban center is Ioannina, a vibrant city built on a peninsula in the middle of Lake Pamvotida, known for its historic castle and silver craftsmanship. Other notable towns include Arta, with its ancient bridge, and Zagori, a cluster of traditional stone villages in the Pindus Mountains. Key attractions include the Vikos-Aoos National Park, home to the deepest gorge in the world, which offers exceptional hiking and rafting opportunities. The historic town of Meteza, located in neighboring Thessaly, is often visited in conjunction with Epirus, as are the monasteries of the Meteora, though strictly speaking, those lie in a different regional unit. Epirus is rich in cultural heritage, featuring many Byzantine churches and monasteries, such as the Monastery of Peribleptos in Ioannina. The cuisine is hearty and rustic, featuring local specialties like feta cheese, smoked meats, and honey from the mountainous regions. The best time to visit is during the spring (May to June) or autumn (September to October) when the weather is mild and suitable for hiking. Summers can be hot in the valleys but pleasant in the higher altitudes, while winters bring snow to the mountains, making it ideal for winter sports in areas like Kato Polemikia. Travelers can reach Epirus via Ioannina National Airport or by bus and car from Athens or Thessaloniki. Public transportation is limited in rural areas, so renting a car is highly recommended for exploring the remote villages and mountain passes.
