The Church of Panagia Parigoritissa is a significant Byzantine monument located on the western slope of Peranthi Hill in Arta, Greece. Founded around 1250 by Despot Michael II Komnenos Doukas and substantially expanded between 1285 and 1296 by his successor Nikephoros I and his wife Anna Palaiologina, the church stands as a prime example of Palaiologan architecture. The structure features a unique octagonal ground floor that supports a cruciform first floor with four corner domes and a central dome, all held together by an intricate system of marble vaults and arches.

Visitors to the site are greeted by the church’s striking exterior, characterized by its use of brick and marble, which is typical of the region’s Byzantine architecture. The interior is equally impressive, adorned with marble revetments and historical frescoes. Although the original decorative program was partially altered over time, the remaining artistic elements provide insight into the religious and cultural life of the era. The church has historically served as a center for the local Orthodox community, and during the Ottoman period, it functioned as a convent for women, preserving its religious significance through various historical changes.

The church remains an active place of worship, offering visitors a chance to experience the spiritual and architectural heritage of the region. The intricate stonework and the serene atmosphere within the church provide a reflective environment for visitors. While specific opening hours may vary, the site is generally accessible to those interested in Byzantine art and history, offering a glimpse into the rich religious traditions of the region.
