Practical Information
Heraklion is best visited during the spring (April to June) or autumn (September to October) when temperatures are mild, ranging from 20°C to 25°C, and crowds are manageable. Summer months, particularly July and August, bring intense heat and heavy tourist crowds, which can make exploring the city center and archaeological sites less comfortable. While the city is walkable, the heat can be exhausting midday, so plan outdoor activities for the early morning or late afternoon.
Getting around the historic center is best done on foot, as the main attractions, including the Venetian Walls, the Koules Fortress, and the Archaeological Museum, are concentrated in a compact, walkable area. For longer distances or to reach the beach, local buses are affordable and reliable, though they can be crowded during peak hours. Taxis are available but can be scarce during peak tourist season, so it is advisable to book in advance or use reputable ride-hailing apps if available.
Accommodation is best located in the city center, particularly around the Old Port, Venetian Harbor, or near the Central Market. This area provides easy access to restaurants, cafes, and major sights, allowing you to walk to most attractions. Staying in this central zone minimizes travel time and allows for flexible scheduling, especially if you plan to enjoy evening strolls or late-night dining.
Budget considerations should account for the fact that while accommodation and local transport are affordable, dining and entrance fees can add up. The Archaeological Museum and other major sites have entry fees, so budget accordingly. Eating locally, such as at tavernas in the old town, offers more affordable options compared to tourist-trap restaurants. It is also wise to carry cash for small purchases, as some smaller vendors may not accept credit cards.
When packing, bring comfortable walking shoes, as you will be walking on cobblestones and uneven surfaces. Lightweight, breathable clothing is essential for the warm Mediterranean climate, along with a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. A reusable water bottle is recommended, as tap water is not always safe to drink, and refillable bottles help reduce waste. Additionally, carry a small amount of cash for tips, small purchases, and places that do not accept credit cards.
