Practical Information

The optimal time to visit Greece for a comprehensive tour is during the shoulder seasons of April to June or September to October. During these months, temperatures are mild, ranging from 20°C to 25°C, making it ideal for exploring archaeological sites and hiking without the intense heat and overwhelming crowds of July and August. Summer months, particularly July and August, can be extremely hot, with temperatures often exceeding 30°C, and are characterized by high tourist density and significantly higher prices. Transportation within Greece is best managed through a combination of domestic flights and ferries. For a 14-day itinerary covering major hubs like Athens, Santorini, and Crete, flying between islands is often more efficient than ferry travel, which can be time-consuming and prone to delays due to seasonal meltemi winds. Major airlines and local carriers operate frequent routes between Athens, Mykonos, and Crete. For land travel, intercity buses (KTEL) are affordable and reliable, connecting major towns, while renting a car is highly recommended for exploring the mainland, such as the Peloponnese or mainland Greece, though it is less necessary on the smaller, flatter islands. Accommodation options vary significantly by location. In Athens, staying in the Plaka, Psiri, or Koukaki neighborhoods provides easy access to the Acropolis and vibrant dining scenes. On the islands, consider staying in the main towns of Oia or Fira on Santorini for convenience, or in Chania and Rethymno on Crete for their historic charm. Booking accommodation well in advance is crucial, especially for the high season, as popular boutique hotels and traditional guesthouses fill up quickly. Budget considerations should account for the fact that Greece is generally affordable compared to Western Europe, but tourist hotspots are increasingly expensive. Budget travelers can manage on €50–€70 per day, while mid-range travelers should budget €100–€150 daily, including accommodation, meals, and local transport. Entrance fees for archaeological sites, such as the Acropolis in Athens, are separate and should be budgeted for separately. When packing, bring lightweight, breathable clothing suitable for warm weather, along with a light jacket for cooler evenings, especially in the islands. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for exploring ancient sites with uneven terrain. Sun protection, including high-SPF sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses, is mandatory. Additionally, carry a reusable water bottle, as tap water is not always potable in the islands, and ensure you have a universal power adapter, as Greece uses the Type C/F plug with 230V electricity.
