Achilleos Square (Spianada)
Achilleos Square (Spianada)
Achilleion Square, commonly known as Spianada, is the largest public square in Corfu and serves as the island’s central hub. The name “Spianada” derives from the Italian word for “flat,” reflecting the area’s origins as a cleared defensive zone created by the Venetians in the 16th century. This open space functions as the civic heart of Corfu, blending historical significance with vibrant daily life.
Visitors will notice the square’s distinctive architecture, most notably the Liston, a grand arcade inspired by Paris’s Rue de Rivoli. The square is also home to the Palace of St. Michael and St. George, a neoclassical building that now houses the Museum of Asian Art. Other notable features include the Peristyle of Maitland and the historic Sterna cistern. The atmosphere is lively, with locals and tourists gathering to socialize, enjoy coffee, or watch street performers.
The square is open to the public at all times, and there is no admission fee for entering the space itself. However, specific attractions within the square, such as the museum, may have separate opening hours and ticket requirements. The area is ideal for a leisurely stroll, offering a blend of historical architecture and modern social life. It is a central point for exploring Corfu, with easy access to nearby attractions and local amenities.
