Blue Caves of Zakynthos

Limestone sea caves with electric blue light

7.7/10
#1 of 4 in Zakynthos

The Blue Caves of Zakynthos are a stunning series of sea caves, arches, and tunnels carved into the white limestone cliffs between Agios Nikolaos and Cape Skinari. These natural formations, shaped by the Ionian Sea over thousands of years, offer a unique visual experience distinct from other coastal grottos. The signature electric blue glow is not a filter but a natural optical phenomenon; sunlight scatters off exceptionally clear water containing pale limestone seabed and walls, saturating skin and swimwear with a cool, cerulean light.

Access is strictly by boat, as the caves feature low ceilings of approximately four meters, preventing larger vessels from entering. Most visitors join small boats with a maximum capacity of fifty seats, departing from Agios Nikolaos or Zakynthos town. These tours often combine the caves with a visit to Shipwreck Beach. For a more intimate experience, private boats holding up to nine people are available for hire.

The largest chamber, known as Kianoun (derived from the Greek word for cyan), features a stalactite ceiling and allows visitors to swim inside. Locals also refer to the sites as Megali Spilia and Mikri Spilia. First documented in 1897 by Antonios Komoutos, the caves remain a popular attraction, though excursions may be cancelled if wind or sea conditions are rough. The intensity of the water’s color varies by hour, making timing an important factor for the best experience. Visitors should note that the area is accessible only via water, requiring careful planning regarding departure points and weather conditions.
