Bourtzi Castle
15th-century island fortress in Nafplio harbor
Bourtzi Castle stands prominently in the center of Nafplio’s harbor, offering visitors a striking view of this historic island fortress. Originally constructed in 1473 by Italian engineer Antonio Gambello under Venetian rule, the site was initially named "Castello dello Soglio." It later adopted the name "Bourtzi," derived from the Turkish word for "island-fortress." The castle served as a critical defensive structure, utilizing a mobile chain and an artificial mound to block hostile ships from entering the port. Throughout its history, it passed between Venetian and Ottoman control, later serving as a prison for Greek Revolution hero Kolokotronis and even housing the Greek government temporarily.
Today, the intact castle is open to the public as an accessible cultural monument. Visitors can explore the site, which features elevators to the first floor and facilities for disabled visitors. An on-site shop offers books and gifts, while the "Alos" restaurant and bar provides dining options with harbor views. Admission costs €7 for full-price tickets and €5 for reduced rates, with free entry available on specific cultural holidays and certain Sundays during the winter months. Opening hours vary by season, extending until 21:00 during the peak summer months of July and August. Located in the Argolid region, Bourtzi remains a key historical landmark, allowing travelers to step into a site that has witnessed centuries of Mediterranean history.
