Lindos Acropolis

On a rocky headland that drops sheer to the Aegean Sea, the Acropolis of Lindos crowns one of Greece’s most dramatic ancient sites, on the island of Rhodes. The Dorians, who founded the city of Lindos, made it the centre of their civic and religious life. The cliff rises about 116 metres above the sea, and the village of Lindos clusters at its foot, some 50 kilometres from Rhodes town. The hill was a sacred place long before the Doric temple was built, and from the Archaic period it was a major sanctuary of Athena Lindia, who gave the city its identity and wealth.

The climb sets the scene. Steps and a worn cobbled path lead up from the village, past a ship carved into the rock face: a relief of a Lindian warship that once served as a pedestal for a statue of a local priest. Donkeys carry visitors up part of the way, though the trail is steep and not suited to wheelchairs. At the summit the walls of the Knights of Saint John form the outer shell, built on top of older works, and a Byzantine chapel stands inside the enclosure.

The ancient layers are clearest beyond the medieval gate. A broad staircase rises to a Hellenistic stoa, a long colonnade of columns that once framed the approach, then to the propylaia, the monumental gateway to the sanctuary. At the top, the Doric Temple of Athena Lindia, rebuilt in the fourth century BC after an earlier building burned, overlooks the cliff edge, some of its columns reconstructed. Beyond it the ground falls away steeply to the sea.

The views are the main reward. Below, the turquoise curve of Lindos Bay, the tiny cove of Saint Paul's Bay and the stacked white houses of the village are laid out like a map. Visitors will find the site is exposed and shadeless, so water, a hat and decent shoes are essential in summer, and marble steps polished by centuries of feet are slippery.

Mornings are best for cooler air and thinner crowds, while late afternoon gives golden light on the stone. Plan around an hour or more for the summit, and combine it with a walk through the village's lanes, where captains' houses and churches fill out the story of the place.
