These months provide comfortable weather for exploring without the intense heat and congestion of peak summer. Access to the island is primarily via ferry from the mainland port of Piraeus in Athens, with travel times ranging from 5 to 8 hours depending on the vessel. Fast ferries are available for a quicker transit, while standard ferries offer a more economical, albeit slower, option. Alternatively, visitors can fly to the nearby islands of Leros or Kos and take a short, 30-45 minute ferry connection to Patmos. Once on the island, the main town of Chora is compact and walkable, but to explore the coastal villages and beaches like Psili Ammos or Grikos, renting a vehicle is highly recommended. ATVs, scooters, and small cars are readily available for rent, providing the flexibility needed to navigate the island’s rugged terrain and reach secluded coves. Accommodation is concentrated in Chora, the capital, which offers the widest selection of hotels, boutique guesthouses, and traditional guesthouses. Staying here provides easy access to the historic Monastery of Saint John, the castle, and the main shopping streets. For a quieter experience, consider staying in Grikos or Kamari, which offer a more local, tranquil atmosphere. Budgeting should account for the island’s premium pricing; dining and accommodation are generally more expensive here than on other Greek islands due to high demand and limited supply. It is advisable to book accommodation and major meals in advance, especially during the high season, to secure better rates and availability. When packing, prioritize lightweight, breathable clothing suitable for hot, sunny weather, along with sturdy footwear for walking on the island’s uneven, rocky paths. Essential items include high-SPF sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses, as the sun can be intense. Swimwear is essential for the numerous beach and cove visits. Additionally, carry a light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings, especially if dining outdoors.
