Beaches

Naxos has some of the best beaches in the Cyclades, and the reason is simple: it is the largest island in the group, with a long western coastline of fine sand that faces away from the strongest winds. Most of the famous stretches run in a line south of Naxos Town, one after another, so it is possible to spend a week trying a different beach each day without moving far from the same base.

Closest to town is Agios Georgios, a shallow, sandy beach within walking distance of the harbour, popular with families and windsurfers. Further south come Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna, a lively pair backed by hotels and tavernas, followed by Plaka, a very long beach of golden sand and dunes that stretches for several kilometres, with space for everyone and some naturist areas at the far end. Beyond it lies Alyko, a quieter bay with juniper trees, sand dunes and the ruins of an unfinished hotel, a favourite of photographers. Farther south, Pyrgaki and Kastraki have wide sand and clear water, and the beaches become quieter the further you go from town.

Different beaches suit different people. Mikri Vigla, on the south-west coast, is known for steady winds that attract windsurfers and kitesurfers, while Orkos, a sheltered cove with golden sand, offers a calm place to swim. Families often pick the shallow waters near the town, and those who want solitude head to the far southern ends, where there are few buildings and the sea is clear. On the east and north coasts the beaches are fewer and more exposed, with pebbles in places, and they are often visited by people who prefer a less crowded setting.

Many beaches have sunbeds, umbrellas and tavernas, with some stretches left natural. The sea is usually clear and warm from June until October, and spring brings wildflowers on the dunes. The meltemi can blow in July and August, so check the wind direction, since the western beaches are mostly sheltered while the east is exposed.

Public buses run along the main stretch from Naxos Town, and renting a scooter or car makes it easy to explore the more remote coves. Carry water and sun protection, since some beaches have little shade, and take rubbish away. Combine a beach day with an evening in the old town and a sunset at the Portara.
