Kastro (Castle) Of Old Town

The Kastro, or Castle, in Naxos is a historic fortified district that serves as the historical heart of the island. Established in 1207 by Marco Sanudo, the structure was built using materials from ancient acropolis sites, including marble blocks from the Temple of Portara. The complex features a pentagonal layout with three original gates, though the main entrance is now through the Trani Porta, or Great Gate, on the northwestern side.

Visitors enter through this gate, where they can observe a vertical marble incision that historically marked measurements for fabric, reflecting the area’s past as a center for trade and textile production. The district is characterized by narrow, winding alleys and historic mansions adorned with coats of arms. A notable landmark within the area is the Della Rocca Barozzi Tower, which now houses the Venetian and Folk History Museum, offering insights into the region's Venetian heritage.

The area is accessible via a free elevator that leads to the upper levels, providing access to the highest point where visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The district includes the Catholic Cathedral, featuring marble floors and memorial stones, as well as the Crispi Tower, the only remaining structure of the original defensive towers. The atmosphere is quiet and historic, offering a distinct contrast to the bustling lower town. Visitors can explore the architecture and history at their own pace, taking in the detailed stonework and the serene ambiance of the upper district.
