Agios Konstantinos Beach

On the eastern side of Volos, a port city roughly midway between Athens and Thessaloniki, the waterfront at Agios Konstantinos Beach, where the city's long seafront promenade bends toward the open water of the Pagasetic Gulf, a small and unusual church has become the symbol of this stretch of coast. The Church of Agioi Konstantinos and Eleni, dedicated to Saint Constantine and his mother Helen, was built in 1936 to a design by the architect Aristotle Zachos, who worked in a neo-Byzantine manner. It sits right on the waterfront, so that waves can be heard from inside and the building has the sea as its backdrop.

The feature that draws attention is the decoration of the exterior. Instead of the usual painted frescoes or marble, the walls carry large figures of saints made of coloured pebbles set in mosaic, in shades of grey, white, brown and red. The images give the church a handmade, folk quality that contrasts with the formal outlines of the building. Visitors often pause to look closely at the details, such as faces and robes picked out in tiny stones, and to take photographs. Inside, the atmosphere is calm and dim, and visitors can light a candle, as in any Orthodox church.

The area around the church is a pleasant stretch of the waterfront, with benches, cafes and space to walk or sit by the water. It is a convenient place to swim or sunbathe in summer, and a good spot to watch the evening light on the gulf. The mountain of Pelion rises on the opposite shore and gives the view a strong backdrop. Because Volos is a working city rather than a resort, the beach has a local character, with families and residents rather than mass tourism.

It is not far from the centre, a walk or short ride along the promenade from the port, and works well as part of a longer evening stroll. The route passes the old tsipouro taverns, which serve small plates of seafood with the local spirit, a tradition of the city. Visitors will find the area lively at night, particularly in summer.

The church is an active place of worship, so those entering should dress modestly. The combination of religious architecture, sea and a quiet corner of a working port gives this part of the waterfront a distinct character that differs from a typical beach destination, and it is worth a short detour for anyone staying in Volos.
