Agios Minas Cathedral

Rising above the old centre of Heraklion, the dome of Agios Minas Cathedral is one of the landmarks of the city and the largest church in town. It was built between 1862 and 1895, during the last decades of Ottoman rule on Crete, and is dedicated to Saint Menas, the patron saint of Heraklion. Menas was a soldier, traditionally an Egyptian, who was martyred around the year 300, and his feast day on 11 November is a major local celebration. The cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Crete.

The design follows the Byzantine tradition, with a cruciform plan, a central dome and a tall bell tower, though the proportions and carved detail show nineteenth-century taste. The scale is part of the point: after centuries of Ottoman restrictions on church building, the Christian community of Heraklion raised a very large church, and that ambition is visible in its size, which makes it one of the largest churches on the island.

Inside, the space is tall and dim, with a gilded iconostasis, hanging chandeliers, rows of carved wooden stalls and walls covered in painted figures of saints and scenes from the Gospels. The Cretan school of icon painting, which flourished under Venetian rule and influenced painters across the Mediterranean, is represented in the town by a museum nearby, and visitors interested in this tradition can pair the two. Candles burn in sand trays near the entrance, and worshippers come and go throughout the day.

The cathedral stands next to a much smaller church, also dedicated to Saint Menas, which dates from the eighteenth century and shows what the city's main church looked like before the larger building rose. The two together make an interesting contrast. Close by are the Church of Saint Titus, a historic building with Venetian and Ottoman layers, and the central pedestrian streets leading toward Lion Square and the Venetian harbour.

Visitors should dress modestly, with covered shoulders and knees, and keep voices low during services. Entry is free. The cathedral is an easy stop on a walk through the city centre, and the plaza in front, shaded by trees, is a good place to rest between sights.
