Archaeological Museum of Syros

Housed in the historic Ermoupoli Town Hall, designed by architect Ernst Ziller, the Archaeological Museum of Syros offers a focused look at the Early Cycladic civilization. Established in 1834–1835 as the central museum for the Cyclades, it is one of Greece’s oldest cultural institutions. Located on Miaouli Square in the heart of Ermoupoli, the museum is easily accessible, situated just a short walk from the main ferry port.

The collection primarily features artifacts from the Early Cycladic era (3rd millennium BC), with significant finds from the prehistoric sites of Kastri and Chalandriani. Visitors can view marble figurines, engraved vessels, obsidian blades, and metal tools excavated by Christos Tsountas. The museum consists of four small rooms that display these items chronologically, extending from the Early Cycladic period through Roman times. This compact layout allows for a brief but informative visit, typically lasting 30 to 45 minutes.

Admission costs €5 for both summer and winter seasons. The museum is generally closed on Tuesdays. During the winter season (November 1 to March 31), it operates from 08:30 to 15:30. In the summer season (April 1 to October 31), hours vary, with extended evening openings until 21:00 in July and August. Last entry is 20 minutes before closing.
