Grikos Beach

Grikos Beach lies in a sheltered bay on the southeast side of Patmos, a few kilometres from Skala and the hill town of Chora, with a small settlement of the same name at the water's edge. The beach has a wide, gently curving shore of coarse sand, backed by tamarisk trees that give natural shade in the afternoon, and a handful of tavernas and a beach bar sit just behind the sand. It is one of the most popular places on Patmos for a relaxed swim, and it feels more like a quiet village cove than a resort.

The bay is protected by the small rocky islet of Tragonisi, whose name means goat island, which sits close to the shore and blocks much of the swell. Because of this, the water is usually calm and clear, with a sandy bottom that shelves gradually, and families with small children find it easy. The Mediterranean light gives the water a deep turquoise tone in the shallows and a darker blue farther out. A short boat or a strong swimmer can reach the islet, where a few sheltered spots suit snorkelling.

Above the bay rises the unusual shape of Kalikatsou, a tall rock formation of dark stone that is a landmark of this stretch of coast and is visible from the beach. Walkers sometimes climb the paths nearby for the view over the bay and the neighbouring islands. A path along the coast leads to the neighbouring bays and, in the other direction, toward the island's main road.

Sunbeds and umbrellas are available for rent at the organised end of the beach, and there are showers and a few shops nearby. The tavernas serve fresh fish, salads and local specialities, and some tables are set almost on the sand, so lunch with a view of Tragonisi is part of the pleasure. Evenings are quiet, and the sunset over the bay is peaceful.

Patmos is smaller and calmer than many Greek islands, and Grikos reflects that mood. May and September are the quiet months, while July and August are busier. A bus runs between Skala and Grikos in season, taxis are available, and a short drive from Chora is easy. Take sun protection, since shade is limited beyond the tamarisks, and consider combining a swim with a visit to the monastery on the hill, which is about ten minutes away by car. The water is cool in spring and warm into October.
