Miaouli Park

Miauli Square, known locally as Plateia Miaouli, serves as the vibrant heart of Ermoupoli, the capital of Syros island. This central public space is a focal point for both residents and visitors, offering a blend of historical significance and modern social life. The square is dominated by a prominent statue of Admiral Andreas Miaoulis, a hero of the Greek War of Independence, which was unveiled in 1889. The name "Miauli" is derived from this tribute to the naval commander, replacing earlier names such as "Othonos" and "Leotsakos."

The square is framed by elegant neoclassical architecture, most notably the City Hall, designed by the renowned German architect Ernst Ziller. Inaugurated in 1898, the building houses municipal services, courts, and the Historical Archive of the Cyclades. It also contains an archaeological museum featuring Cycladic and Byzantine exhibits, as well as a municipal library with rare materials on Syros history. A cultural center and a bandstand adorned with bas-reliefs of Apollo and the muses further enhance the square’s cultural atmosphere.

Visitors often gather here to enjoy the shade of palm trees, watch the local activity, or visit the nearby cafes and restaurants. The area is pedestrian-friendly and easily accessible from the waterfront and the upper town of Ano Syros. While the square itself is open to the public at all times, the museums and archives within the City Hall have specific opening hours. Miaouli Square offers a peaceful yet lively environment, providing a glimpse into the aristocratic past and civic pride of Ermoupoli. It is an ideal spot for people-watching and understanding the social dynamics of this historic Cycladic town.
