Miaouli Square

Miaouli Square serves as the vibrant heart of Ermoupoli on the island of Syros, functioning as the city’s primary social and cultural hub. Located in the Lower Town, this expansive open space is celebrated for its striking Neoclassical architecture and elegant atmosphere. The square features shimmering marble pavement framed by palm trees, creating a refined setting that reflects Ermoupoli’s history as a major maritime and commercial center in the 19th century.

At its center stands a monument dedicated to Admiral Andreas Miaoulis, a hero of the Greek War of Independence, which was installed in 1889 and gave the square its current name. The square is also anchored by the Ermoupoli City Hall, designed by the renowned architect Ernst Ziller in the late 19th century, and a marble bandstand from 1907 adorned with bas-reliefs of Apollo and the muses. The municipal library is also located nearby, adding to the area’s intellectual heritage.
