Port of Volos

The port of Volos is the working harbour of a city that has long been the main sea outlet of Thessaly and the base for Greek ferries to the northern Aegean islands. It lies at the head of the Pagasetic Gulf, below Mount Pelion, and handles both cargo and passenger traffic, including ferries to the islands of the Sporades such as Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos. The setting is practical rather than polished, with cranes, ships and warehouses beside the promenade, and that honest, lived-in quality is part of its appeal.

The passenger area is the first stop for most travellers. Ticket offices, a waiting hall and cafes serve those going to the islands, and the quay is busy with ferries, fast boats and hydrofoils in summer, when services are most frequent. Travel times to the nearest islands are usually a couple of hours, and schedules change with the season, so it is wise to check the timetable and buy tickets in advance for busy days. Visitors arriving by car should look for the parking areas near the port.

The harbour also has a deep history. This coast is the legendary home of Jason and the Argonauts, whose city of Iolcus lay near modern Volos, and who are said to have set sail from here on the voyage in search of the Golden Fleece. A full-scale replica of the ship Argo is displayed near the waterfront, and it gives the harbour an unusual landmark. The waterfront promenade, with its cafes and tavernas, stretches out from the port, and many visitors spend an hour here before a ferry.

In the evenings, the area around the port fills with residents who come for tsipouro and meze, a tradition in Volos. Small tavernas serve plates of grilled octopus, fried fish and cheese with glasses of the clear spirit, and the harbour lights add atmosphere. Walking along the seafront gives views of fishing boats, ferries and the dark outline of Pelion across the gulf.

The port is not a sightseeing destination in itself, but it works as the starting point for exploring the region. From here visitors can head to the villages of Pelion, the archaeological museum and the market, or take a boat to the islands. It is easy to reach on foot from the centre, and the surrounding streets have shops and cafes for waiting travellers.
