Benaki Museum

The Benaki Museum of Greek Culture occupies a neoclassical mansion on Vasilissis Sofias Avenue, facing the National Garden on the edge of central Athens. The house was built in the 1910s for the Benakis family, wealthy cotton merchants from Alexandria. Antonis Benakis, a collector who grew up in Egypt, donated the house and his collection to the Greek state, and the museum opened to the public in 1931. It is Athens' main museum of Greek culture through the ages, in contrast to the archaeological focus of the National Archaeological Museum.

The collection is arranged chronologically over several floors, taking visitors from prehistory to the twentieth century in a single continuous walk. Early rooms hold Neolithic and Bronze Age objects, classical pottery and gold jewellery, including items from the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Byzantine sections include icons, ivory and silver, while later floors cover post-Byzantine religious art, regional costumes, embroidery, folk jewellery and household objects. The costume and textile collection is one of the finest in the country. Upper rooms present the Greek War of Independence and the formation of the modern state, with weapons, portraits and personal belongings, and the top levels include reconstructed rooms from mansions in northern Greece with carved wooden ceilings.

The top-floor cafe and terrace have views across the National Garden and the city, a pleasant place for a pause. There is also a good museum shop with books and reproductions of jewellery.

The museum belongs to a wider Benaki network, with separate sites around Athens such as the Museum of Islamic Art, the Ghika Gallery and the Pireos Street annexe, all of which have their own tickets and opening patterns. Visitors with limited time usually take the main building on Vasilissis Sofias and treat the others as extras.

Allow two or three hours for the main museum, more if textiles and icons are of particular interest. Quieter mid-morning visits give room for the smaller cases, and temporary exhibitions in the lower galleries change several times a year. The mansion is a short walk from Syntagma Square and from the Evangelismos metro station, and combines naturally with a stroll through the garden or a visit to the Byzantine and Christian Museum nearby.
