Giola is a natural seawater pool on the south coast of Thassos, close to the village of Astris, and it is one of the most photographed swimming spots on the island. It is a basin carved into the rock at the water's edge, partly open to the Aegean Sea through a gap and a channel in the cliffs, so waves refresh it while the walls shelter the water from the open sea. The result is a deep pool with calm, very clear water that looks green and emerald in the sun, and a smooth bottom of white stone and sand.
The rock around it is pale and weathered, with sheer sides that rise a few metres above the water. In some places, the walls form natural ledges, and the highest sections are used by confident swimmers to jump into the deep part, though this carries risk, and the depth varies with the swell. There is no lifeguard, so extra care is needed, especially with children. The water is warmer in the afternoon than in the open sea, since the sun heats the shallow edges, and it is very calm on windless days.
Reaching Giola takes a short walk. From the road near Astris, a path leads across rough ground and over rock to the edge of the pool, and the last stretch is a scramble over uneven stone that can be slippery. Shoes with grip are needed, and flip-flops are a poor choice. The place has no facilities, shade or sunbeds, so visitors bring their own water, a hat, a towel and sun protection. It can feel crowded in the middle of the day in July and August, since the pool is small and everyone wants the same spot.
For a quieter visit, go in the early morning or late in the day, when the light is gentle and the water is still. Early visits also give the best photographs, because the sun reaches the pool at an angle and the colours deepen. Spring and autumn are calmer, although the water is cooler.
Astris itself has a small beach with tavernas, and other sights on Thassos, such as the marble beaches and the ancient harbour at Aliki, can be visited on the same day. Giola is free to visit and open at all times, but rough seas can make the area dangerous, so it is wise to avoid it in strong wind or high waves. Take your litter with you.
