Gulf Of Panagia (Marine Area)

The Gulf of Panagia is a bay on the eastern coast of Thassos, an island in the northern Aegean a short ferry ride from the Greek mainland ports of Kavala and Keramoti. Thassos is known for its pine-covered mountains, marble, olive oil and honey, and its east coast is where many of the island's sandy beaches lie, with the sea facing the sunrise. The gulf is a calm stretch of shoreline where hills run down to clear water, and it feels more relaxed than the busier resort areas.

Above the bay stands the village of Panagia, built on a mountainside and one of the best preserved traditional settlements on the island. Its stone houses, with wooden balconies, step up the slope among plane trees, and cold spring water runs from public fountains in the village square, a welcome sight on hot summer days. The village has tavernas under trees, small shops selling honey and local products, and a church that plays a central role in village life. It is much cooler than the coast, and the view across the roofs to the sea is a highlight.

The coast itself is a place for swimming and snorkelling. The water is clear, the bottom is a mix of sand and rock, and small rocky headlands create sheltered corners where fish are easy to see. Paths and local roads link the bay with neighbouring villages, and walks along the shore give a sense of the landscape without much effort.

Panagia is also known for local festivals. Around the feast of the Dormition on 15 August, the village holds celebrations with music, food and dancing in the square, and visitors are welcome to join. Other traditions follow the church calendar, and the community comes together for them.

Thassos is reached by regular ferries from Keramoti and Kavala, and a road circles the island, with Panagia on the eastern side of the loop. Summer is hot and busy, so spring and early autumn offer calmer visits. Bring comfortable shoes for the village lanes, and take water on coastal walks, since shade is limited. The bay is free to enter and open at all times, and the best swimming is in the morning when the water is calm.
