Ipsarion Summit

Mount Ipsarion, also written Ypsarion or Ypsario, is the highest point of Thassos, an island of the northern Aegean, at 1,204 metres. It rises in the centre of the island, covered with dense pine and fir forest on its lower slopes and bare, rocky ground near the top. From the summit, the whole of Thassos lies below, ringed by the Aegean Sea, and on exceptionally clear days the view reaches the mainland coast and the peaks of the Chalkidiki peninsula, where Mount Athos can be made out far to the southwest.

The mountain is a place to leave the beaches behind. The forest holds streams, springs and shady clearings, and it is home to a rich variety of birds, wild flowers and herbs. Honey is one of the island's well-known products, and beekeepers place their hives in the forests, so the mountain is a good place to see this tradition. The climb can be made on foot by marked trails, though many people see the area on a jeep tour that follows forest tracks up to the higher ground, and the full ascent is a long day that needs fitness and good footwear.

Cultural stops are part of the route. The hilltop village of Kastro, on the mountainside, was built by the villagers in the Middle Ages as a place of refuge from pirates, and its stone houses, church and views show how people adapted to the threat. The small Panagouda Monastery lies on the slopes in the same part of the island and gives a quiet pause on the way. These places connect the mountain with the island's history of fortified settlements, and they make the trip more than a pure nature outing.

Weather changes quickly at altitude. Mornings are often clear, with clouds forming in the afternoon, and winds can make the summit cold even in summer. Bring layers, a hat, water and sun protection, and do not rely on phone coverage in the forest. Spring brings wild flowers, and autumn brings cooler air and clear views.

The natural site itself has no entrance fee or opening hours, and guided jeep tours are run by local operators with prices that vary by season and group. Thassos is reached by ferry from Keramoti or Kavala on the mainland, and the roads on the island make the foot of the mountain easy to reach by car. Allow most of a day for a trip to the summit and back, and expect Thassos’s interior to feel far from the coast.
