Great Monastery (Great Meteoron)

The Great Monastery, or Megalo Meteoron, stands as the largest and most prominent monastery in the Meteora complex. Located on the highest peak in the area, it offers panoramic views of the surrounding Thessalian plain. Founded in the 14th century by Saint Athanasios, the monastery is a significant religious site within the UNESCO World Heritage landscape.

Visitors must navigate approximately 150 steep steps to reach the entrance from the parking area, so comfortable walking shoes are essential. The site is open daily, typically from 09:30 to 15:00, though hours may vary slightly by season. A modest entrance fee of €5 is required, and payment is accepted in cash only.

Inside, the monastery features a main church, a traditional kitchen, and a refectory. The architecture reflects the austere lifestyle of the monks, with simple stone structures and religious artifacts. Visitors are expected to dress modestly; men are prohibited from wearing shorts, and women must cover their shoulders. The monastery is closed on specific dates, including August 5–7 and the last two days of September, so checking opening hours before visiting is advisable.
