Agios Achillios (The Frourio/ Fortress)

The Frourio, or Hill of the Castle, is the old acropolis of Larissa, a low hill rising above the Pinios River in the middle of the city. People have lived on it since ancient times, and its position above the river and the plain of Thessaly made it the natural place for fortifications under the Byzantines and later the Ottomans. Today it is a quiet, tree-shaded park, and a good place to see how the layers of the city's history sit in a single place. The church of Agios Achillios stands on the hill, and the saint is part of what makes this one of the most meaningful places in Larissa.

Achillios was bishop of Larissa in the fourth century and is remembered as one of the bishops who attended the First Council of Nicaea in 325. He became the patron saint of the city, and the Basilica of Saint Achillios, locally known as Frourio, is dedicated to him. His relics later travelled far: in the late tenth century they were taken from Larissa to the Prespa lakes in the north, where a church on a small island is named after him. That story shows how widely his cult spread, and it gives a sense of how important Larissa was in the early Christian world.

The church follows Orthodox tradition, with icons, candles and the scent of incense, and it is a working place of worship, so visitors should dress modestly and keep conversation quiet. Services happen at set times, and the church is often open in the morning. Outside, paths loop around the hill, with benches and views over the rooftops and the river to the plain beyond, where fields stretch to the horizon. On a clear day the view is wide and calm, a contrast to the traffic below.

Beside the church, the ruins of an earlier basilica and parts of the old fortification give additional context. The ancient theatre lies at the foot of the hill on the south side, so a visit to the Frourio combines naturally with that site and with the walk along the river, where the Mill of Pappas has been turned into a cultural space.

The hill is a short walk from the city centre, and paths are paved in places and gravel in others. Evenings are pleasant, with families strolling and the city lights coming on. Opening times for the church vary, so check on the day. A visit takes between half an hour and an hour, longer if you wish to sit and look out over the Thessalian plain.
