Mill Of Pappas

Larissa lies in the middle of the great plain of Thessaly, the most productive grain country in Greece, so it is fitting that one of its best-known buildings is a flour mill. The Mill of Pappas, a tall industrial block on the edge of the old Tampakia riverside district, was built in 1893 and was for years among the largest mills in the region. Five storeys of brick and stone rise above the surrounding streets, and its chimney and long rows of windows make it unmistakable. The mill ground local wheat until the twentieth century and then fell silent, as many industrial buildings in Greek cities did.

After it closed, the building was restored and given new purposes, a fine example of industrial heritage reused for culture. Today the mill is home to a mix of institutions. The Museum of Grains and Flours explains the story of wheat and bread in Thessaly, with machinery and displays that show how grain was turned into flour. The building also hosts the Thessalian Theatre, a municipal theatre company, the municipal Philharmonic Orchestra and a puppet theatre, so it is a lively centre for performance and rehearsal as well as for exhibitions.

The interior keeps much of its industrial character. Large open floors and sturdy columns have been adapted to serve as galleries and event spaces, and parts of the old mechanism and the original timber are still visible. Visitors who come for a performance or exhibition will find that the contrast between the heavy industrial architecture and the artistic activity within is part of the appeal. Special events, workshops and open days are held during the year.

The mill lies close to the city's intercity bus station and to the Pineios river, which makes it easy to reach on foot from several parts of town. A short walk leads to the river promenade, the ancient theatre and the old quarter around the hill of Agios Achillios, so the mill can fit into a half-day walk through the city.

Opening hours depend on the institution, and the performances follow their own schedule, so it is worth checking what is on before visiting.
