Archaeological Museum of Trikala

Trikala is a lively town in western Thessaly, built on the Lithaios river, and the Archaeological Museum of Trikala is its museum, which collects the finds from the surrounding district. The museum stands in the Mahonas neighbourhood and is a small, quiet place that gives a view of the long history of the plain. The ancient city of Trikke, on whose site Trikala grew, was famous in antiquity as a centre of the worship of Asklepios, the god of healing, and tradition even held that he was born here.

The collection brings together material from excavations in the city and the wider region. Visitors will find pottery, stone sculpture, inscribed stelae, bronze objects and coins from different periods, arranged to show how the area developed from prehistoric settlement through the Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods. Funerary objects from cemeteries are a significant part of the display, and inscriptions give names and details of individuals who lived in the area. A late Roman floor mosaic is one of the highlights and shows the quality of decoration that wealthy houses had in the region at the end of antiquity.

The museum is not large, and a visit takes under an hour, which makes it a good addition to a day in town rather than a destination on its own. It pairs naturally with the castle on the hill above the old town and with the Varousi quarter, where Ottoman-era houses and narrow lanes survive. Along the river there are promenades, cafes and bridges, and the town is a good base for exploring the monasteries of Meteora, which lie only about twenty kilometres away.

Because of the museum's size, labels and displays are a good guide, and visitors who read the information panels will gain a clear picture of Thessaly's past. The finds are mainly of regional importance rather than world-famous, which gives the place a quiet, local character. Visitors should check the current opening days with the Ephorate of Antiquities, since the museum is usually closed on Tuesdays and on public holidays such as January 1 and March 25, and hours change in summer.
