Kastro of Trikala (Castle)

The Kastro of Trikala, also known as Trikala Castle, is a medieval Byzantine citadel perched on a hill in the northeastern part of the city. Built originally in the 6th century by Emperor Justinian I on the ruins of the ancient acropolis of Trikke, the fortress has evolved significantly over the centuries. The current structure largely dates from the Palaiologan period in the 14th century, featuring extensive rebuilding that reflects its strategic importance through various historical eras, including the Ottoman occupation.

Visitors exploring the site encounter a typical Byzantine fortification characterized by an elongated shape reinforced with square towers. The castle is divided into three distinct enceintes on different levels of the hill: a lower fortress, a large middle fortress, and an inner fortress known as Its Kale. The exterior walls are polygonal, supported by five main towers and several small turrets. A notable feature is the prominent clock tower, which stands approximately 33 meters high and was constructed in 1936, replacing an earlier Ottoman-era tower built in 1648.

The location offers panoramic views of Trikala and the surrounding Lithaios River valley. While the city center is known for its vibrant atmosphere and cultural heritage, the castle provides a quiet, historical contrast. The site is accessible via steep paths or roads leading up the hill. Although specific opening hours and admission fees are not fixed, the exterior grounds are generally open for exploration.
