Neoi Poroi is sometimes mistaken for a neighbourhood of Volos, but the village is actually a seaside settlement on the Pierian coast of northern Greece, on the Thermaic Gulf, several hours' drive from the Pagasetic Gulf. It lies between Katerini and the coastal strip near Platamon, where the plain of Pieria meets the sea and the great mass of Mount Olympus rises behind. The position is its main attraction: sea in front, mountain behind and a flat, green strip of fields and holiday homes in between.

The settlement is mostly residential, a spread of family houses, small apartment buildings and holiday homes laid out along a grid of quiet streets near the beach. Unlike the more developed resorts along the same coast, it keeps a low-key, local character, and much of its life goes on in small cafes, tavernas and kiosks near the shore. In summer the population grows as families from Katerini and from further afield come for weekends and holidays, and the beach and the seafront become busy in the evenings.

The beach is the core of the place, a long strip facing the Thermaic Gulf. Several beach bars and tavernas stand along it, and the setting sun over the water can be seen from the waterfront promenade. On clear days the snow-capped outline of Olympus is visible to the west, giving the shore a dramatic backdrop that few Greek beaches can match.

Visitors who stay here usually use it as a quiet base for exploring Pieria. The mountain village of Litochoro, a gateway to the Olympus trails, lies a short drive away, as does the medieval castle of Platamon on its headland. The ancient sanctuary of Dion, with its mosaics and the remains of a Hellenistic city, is another day trip, and Katerini offers shops and services. A car is the easiest way to get around, though buses connect the village with the town.

Because it is largely residential, the village has limited services beyond the basics, and the pace is slow outside high season. It suits those who want a straightforward seaside stay without the crowds of the busier resorts, and who enjoy local food and views of the mountain. Summer is the main season, but late spring and early autumn are calm and pleasant.
